Comfort Over Anything
Whenever you come across the word “fashion”, what readily comes to mind other than appearance? First and foremost, your mind immediately creates images of that very colourful dress, blouse, skirt, shoes, bags to match, belts, wristwatches, earrings, cufflinks, as well as the hairstyle which would definitely give one that perfect finish. From another perspective, fashion entails the prevailing styles and newest creations of designers in clothing, foot wears, accessories, make up, and the likes.
A major factor which describes fashion is its fleeting features, as fashion today, is out-dated tomorrow. It never stays permanent, as changes are constant. Truth is, there’s always a recycling of fashion with little or no changes in some cases. The trends of today can similarly be seen in some of the photographs which our parents and even grandparents took as young people (pencil trousers, stiletto sandals, wedges, afro (team natural hair) and many other notable similarities). I bet you’ve noticed this too. This goes on to buttress the fact that whenever a fashion trend is out-dated, people abandon such items and move on to the next one.
The CEO of Lawiza Creations, Mrs Bose Adegunwa expressed that fashion is a person’s total way of life, which comprises of an individual’s dressing and presentation of one’s self. “It’s good to be in vogue, dress up beautifully and follow the trend, but people must learn to consider their age, body structure and position in the society before embracing a trend. There are certain trends which people of certain ages should not indulge in because there’s time for everything. Don’t follow trends blindly, but decipher what suits you and what doesn’t.” she said. She terms it charming when an individual enters a gathering of people and dresses appropriately. In her words, “it is really beautiful to see a woman in a dress, neatly cut, well-shaped, not necessarily very glamorous, but a good combination of fabrics and carriage. That’s fashionable to me.”
For Monalixy, my beautiful friend and fashionista, she describes fashion as self-expression in its truest form. “Anything which makes a person confident in their skin is fashionable. Fashion can also be termed a way of life and an expression of one’s identity. For me, it is fashionable to follow trends to some extent because, fashion always has a place for everyone. The ability of individuals to find their place in a trend is fashionable, especially with the innovation in the fashion industry (which shows in the way designers create something spectacular and stylish by blending native pieces with foreign styles)” she said.
On a personal note, fashion is an expression of one’s self in their own unique way, wearing whatever excites you, makes you comfortable and gives you confidence, rather than try to impress people and keep up with the trend. It’s a means of showcasing one’s self without any reservations/owing no one an apology. There are certain people who never dress according to the fashion trend, but still look presentable and stylish and turn heads wherever they go because they feel good about themselves. On the other hand, there are so many others who wear the ‘in-thing’ and everyone who sees them can’t help but wonder what the struggle is, because the outfit doesn’t do them any justice.
Despite the constant change in fashion, some people refuse to study their bodies to know what fits and what does not fit their bodies. It is of great importance to ensure that your outfit compliments your body (accentuates your assets and unique features appropriately), while giving you a good feel about yourself. It’s right to ensure that you analyse a trend carefully before embracing such. Ask yourself questions like "will I appear awesome or shabby"? "Will the fashion police be after me"? Note that fashion has a way of building or marring your self esteem. Decide what parts of your body should be revealed or concealed and how much you should bare.
On that note, you can still remain beautifully dressed without wearing what everyone else is wearing at the particular time, after all fashion should express who you truly are, not what everyone expects you to be. Be comfortable and proud in whatever style you choose to embrace as long as it works perfectly on you.
P.S. Guys, this applies to you too oooo. Don't assume you're not included in this matter.
