Andy's Lollipop

Today, I'm all about you
Who else could it be?
While I was his candy
You were Andy's lollipop
Like a flower in it's time of bloom
You left at your peak
Oh! Never shall we see a groom
Not now, not ever for you
Such beauty vanished
An experience ever dreaded

An embodiment of beauty
Many marvel at your beauty
An angel indeed
She'd win a contest, they say
Are you telling me, I say
She must be turning heads at the moment
In her grave? Or in decay?
Always dismayed you're not alive
If only one could be spared for beauty
But no, it's never so
Vanity, the bible says so

Never to toy with anyone
I learnt from losing you
The only sister I had
Since our golden baby left
Years gone by
Yet you remain fresh in my heart
Only teary and full of regrets
For all the unnecessary conflicts
But that never makes a change
To say I miss you is child's play

Many had claimed we look alike
I myself have seen a bit
Pictures purporting a semblance
Not so glaring but in existence
A sister with peculiar flaws

Just as all humans are
Despite this, all confess
At first sight what a beauty!
Your beautiful laughter
Tall and slender, a model
Never walked the runway, tho
Lowly and humble character
Mischievous schemes and smile
They all just made you Utibe

Words fail me Sister
Alas, I must speak
It was never a competition
I should've realized same in love
Never about who did or didn't do what
Family should not be judged
The way I did is what I mean
All I needed to do was accept
Love and appreciate in truth
That I failed I don't understand
We learn from mistakes I see
Daily wishing I never made this one

I see you in my memories
Picking a fight
Preparing sweet things
Even in the absence of a party
Laughing hard at our childishness
Singing cheerfully doing house chores
Kicking me with your long legs
Just lying down and fiddling with your phone
Having some girl talk
I miss you Andy's lollipop
Holding unto this hope
To meet at the resurrection

Hey you! Got dignity?

Benita Damilola is a young graduate, living in Lagos, who had served her fatherland as required and was in need of a job. Her routine became; waking up in the morning, having her quiet time, doing house chores and just idling about either reading, sleeping, browsing or sleeping again, with sleep being the major work experience she could easily guarantee for her CV. Tired of staying at home idle with a boring routine, she decided there had to be a change.

Benie, as she was popularly called decided to speak with an old friend who had asked her to come see him. First, he asked if she would love to work at his hotel in the East. She declined that offer and he promised he'd get something meaningful for her, something she'd love to do and find fulfilment in.

Thankful to God for this little ray of hope, she agreed to go see the entrepreneur. Fortunately, she remembered to pray that God should make everything clear to her; "should I forget about or hold on to this lead, please give me a sign, Lord," she prayed.

The entrepreneur, Chief told her to meet him at one of the First Bank branches in Ikeja and she got there and sat in a chair. They were very comfortable, since there was a crowd of people. He started talking about work in a funny way. "Why do you want to work in a bank when people in the banking sector are looking for a way out? Just go and look for a husband and marry and stop bothering yourself or, are you saying none has come yet?"

Benie looked at him confused and kept asking herself "how did I get here?" She mustered courage and told him "Chief, life is not just based on marriage. There's more to life than getting married and relying on a man all the days of your life, running to him for money for salt and pepper. I want to be able to do something by myself, for myself when the need comes up, as often as I can. Marriage isn't just about money"

He laughed hysterically and told Benie that she spoke as a child. Shortly, the head of all First bank branches in that area arrived and Chief became very uncomfortable and left the bank. While at the ATM stand, the head and her entourage came outside and their car was parked behind him. Chief hurriedly walked away and entered a pathway in the market. Of course, Benie followed with 'loads' of doubt in her heart.

In a flash, Chief turned and looked at Benie, then said, you're more beautiful and mature than you were when I met you four years ago. Benie uncomfortably said thank you and Chief's hands found themselves on Benie's shoulders as in a form of embrace and Benie's instincts told her to resist him, while her mind also reminded her that she needed a job and should keep quiet or ruin the job promises made.

Benie thought within; "no matter how small the dignity I have left, I have to protect it. Benie, there's no allowing any foolish drama to ensue because you have a need" and immediately told Chief she was uncomfortable with his laying hands on her shoulder that way and the Chief asked her " you think say you dey go Church pass me?" and Benie quickly replied "maybe," wearing a smile which spelt triumph. He put down his hand and told her the meeting was over. "You came to me so i could help you with a job, how can you now tell me you're uncomfortable because I patted you on the shoulder?" "No, you didn't pat me on the shoulder Sir," she interrupted. "You have a dirty mind'" he quickly added and told her he's done. "Thank you, Sir" was Benie's reply as she turned and walked away.

Benie walked away with pride and dignity that day. You may think Benie wasn't right in her decision...opinions differ but Benie knew she would never speak to Chief again. She assumed he had changed because he tried to play his cards well. Chief had attempted to get Benita into his bed already by trying to lure her to travel to see him and she had declined. Though imperfect and guilty of some 'immoral' deeds, she had overcome this one and the peace and joy that flooded her mind as she walked away was unexplainable.

"Don't loose your dignity and self-respect trying to make people love and appreciate you." Many of the 'little' things you ignore because of one need or the other have a way of taking away your dignity. Let NOTHING at all deprive you of that which you have left, no matter how little you may think it is. Protect that bit by walking away from that situation with your head held high.

Think about it, have you got any dignity?

Birthday Thoughts

Hello reader,

It was my birthday on 11th July and taking a quick look at life, I've sincerely just seen God's involvement. 23 years of life! Now, you should know that I don't deserve that. Numerous young people whom I know and even some I do not know lost their lives at 22 as well as before 22 (God bless their souls), but I'm standing tall at 23, numbering my days, that I might apply my heart unto wisdom.

Anyway, the major thing isn't just to keep growing older and receiving loads of birthday wishes from the numerous people who facebook reminded it was your birthday, and smiling at their choice of words which flatter you tremendously, or  enjoying the day, throwing a party and just having mad fun all the way. Yes, I agree with you; that part is very much welcome and good for your spirit, but there's more to a birthday than that. Don't you think so?

It's also a time of reflection; for every birthday, find time to reflect on life as a whole. Has it been fruiful, with loads of acheivements (both personal and societal)? Then, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Seeing how much you've grown in age and physique, you are also expected to grow in knowledge, maturity, thoughts, and achievements especially. Pressure comes your way from all sides and you get confused on what to do/believe/accept/disregard at the moment. Just take a break and think; do these factors being pushed on me align with that which I desire to acheive right now?

Through all the mumbo jumbo, I hope you get the message. Age comes with expectations and responsibility. Reflect on your life as often as you can and make changes where you feel the need to.

I remain your friend in the journey,
Me.

Elena

Elena was a beautiful girl who loved singing, jumping round the house and running in the fields surrounding her home like there was something after her. These she did daily as they were her hobbies and she felt like she could not do without these things. At age 4, she discovered how much she loved these habits and kept up with these till she turned 14. By now, she could run very far and had dreams to become an athlete and enrol in the junior Olympics track and field events. She was indeed a natural.

Imagine how she felt when she enrolled and on the day of the race, while training for the big day to ensure she didn't make a mess, slipped and fell. It was a fall like never before, her vision got blurry and everything went black. One of the trainers for another athlete sighted her fall and with a caring heart sprinted as fast as her feet could carry her to Elena's side and called the Emergency line.

"Stay with me," the trainer muttered over and over in the ambulance, while holding Elena's hands and praying silently that the girl gets fine because the fall was severe. She was rushed into the hospital and taken straight to the operating room. The trainer returned to the arena and continued with her job, but her heart was with the little girl who may never fulfil her dreams as a runner/high jumper.

So many anxious people paced in the waiting room, praying for a miracle. It came in the form of the doctor telling Elena's parents that, "Elena is fine, surgery was successful, but she may never have the ability to run or jump as she used to anymore otherwise she may be crippled completely"

Their hearts sank as they knew how devastating that would be for Elena but wiped their tears and decided to stand by and encourage her through her plight. Elena was discharged few days after and she returned home and focused on school, though not the same anymore. All the beauty she saw in her life seemed faded and she just didn't feel the breeze as before or sun rays as fascinating. The moon no longer shone through her window; sadness and frustration set in.

By and by, Elena read letters from the trainer who had become her friend, encouraging her to reach for something else and be the best at it. She realised that she couldn't return to her life again as it ended just before it actually begun. "No more running or jumping, what in the world will become of me?" She cried herself to sleep and wouldn't take solace even in her parent's comfort. One day, she decided it was enough and pledged to move on with life. "If I can't do something i know to do, then i must learn and know to do another," she posited.

Rising from bed one day, she went to her mother and with the biggest smile she could muster told her, "I think I'm ready to start afresh". That came as a shock, but great relief to her mother who pulled her closer and enveloped her in a warm embrace " How happy I am for you my daughter, it's about time," she said.

"I want to go to school and become a doctor so that I can take care of people who feel hopeless. I believe I'm best suited because I've been there before and would be in a good place to feel their pain and frustration. Something good came from all of this, Mum"

It was a very emotional but tremendous sight to behold. Elena was able to make something good out of all that she had faced. Leaving her first love, though difficult, she moved on to something else. She found something worth 'fighting' for and became a medical doctor at the end of it all, specialising as a paediatrician.

The lesson from her story is this: If you have been in a situation that was unpleasant and sank into agony and pain, without making something good out of it, hold on for a miracle but if it doesn't come, then it's time to arise from that torment and forge ahead. That experience should mould you into the best person for what's ahead of you. Find something else to 'fight' for. Life is beautiful, you can't take that away.
